Why choose Nuffield Health Tees Hospital for your ear wax removal treatment

Consultant ENT surgeon and ear specialist Mr Anirvan Banerjee has set up a one-stop Ear Wax Clearance clinic at Nuffield Health Tees Hospital in Norton, which serves patients from Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Darlington and the surrounding areas.

Ear wax is naturally produced to keep your ears clean and free of germs and for most people it passes out of the ears harmlessly, but sometimes a build-up can occur and block the ears which can cause discomfort, hearing loss and affect a person’s quality of life. If over-the-counter pharmacy treatments don’t resolve these symptoms your GP surgery may try ear irrigation; which involves injecting a jet of water into the ear to try to remove the wax.

This is similar to traditional ear syringing methods, but generally less forceful and can fail to effectively remove the wax and may be uncomfortable.

Microsuction of the ear canal (ear wax clearance) procedure

Mr Banerjee uses a minimally invasive technique for Ear Wax Clearance known as microsuction. Using no liquids, this is an extremely safe and comfortable method of ear wax removal. The use of a microscope provides a clear view of the ear canal and eardrum to allow the miniature suction device to gently remove the wax in a controlled and effective manner. It does not carry the same risks of trauma and infection that can be associated with syringing or irrigation.

Most people tolerate microsuction very well and it is also safe for patients with a history of previous ear perforation. The use of wax softening drops such as olive oil, in the few days prior to microsuction, can help with the process. Typically most patients manage to have their ears cleared in one session.
