• How is resection different from endometrial ablation?

  Resection physically cuts the lining away using a heated wire loop, while ablation destroys the lining in place, relying on heat, cold or a similar energy source rather than removing any tissue. Both aim to cut down heavy bleeding, and your gynaecologist can help you weigh up which fits your situation.

• Can resection help if I'm struggling to conceive?

  It can, in cases where a fibroid or polyp inside the womb is getting in the way. Cutting the growth out while keeping the healthy lining intact may improve your chances of becoming pregnant.

• Will I need a general anaesthetic?

  Not always. Sedation in a women's health unit is an option for many women, while others are put fully to sleep in a theatre setting when that's the better choice.

• Do I still need cervical smear tests afterwards?

  Yes. This procedure doesn't touch or change your cervix, so your usual cervical screening continues as before.

• When should I get medical help afterwards?

  Get in touch with your GP or the hospital if bleeding remains heavy, your pain hasn't eased after 48 hours, your tummy feels swollen or sore, or you develop a high temperature.
