About

Professor Christian Becker is Professor of Reproductive Sciences at the University of Oxford and a Consultant Gynaecologist and Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUHFT),primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

He studied medicine in Budapest, Berlin, and San Francisco, graduating in 1995. He completed his clinical training in Berlin and Oxford, and was awarded a Medical Doctorate (cum laude) by the Free University of Berlin in 1998. Professor Becker undertook two postdoctoral research fellowships at Harvard Medical School, based at Boston Children’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, from 1998 to 2000 and again from 2003 to 2005. In November 2005, he joined the University of Oxford as a Clinical Fellow at the Oxford Fertility Unit and subsequently qualified as an RCOG Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery. Appointed Consultant Gynaecologist in May 2009, Professor Becker has served as the Clinical Lead for Endometriosis and Adolescent Gynaecology at OUHFT since 2015.

 He regularly performs surgery for women experiencing pelvic pain, infertility, abnormal bleeding, fibroids, or ovarian cysts, and also provides conservative management when appropriate. In addition to his NHS role, he is Co-Director of the private fertility clinic Oxford Reproductive Health (oxrh.co.uk). Professor Becker also co-directs the Endometriosis CaRe Centre, where he leads a comprehensive research programme spanning basic science, translational, and clinical research. He currently chairs the ESHRE Endometriosis Guideline Development Group and is a member of the NICE Guideline Committee for Endometriosis.

Research

Professor Becker is the Co-Director of the Oxford Endometriosis CaRe Centre where they aim to combine excellent clinical management with world-class research. As such the team is investigating possible biomarkers for endometriosis, potential genetic causes of the condition and try to identify novel therapeutic targets. They are involved in various clinical studies as well as large-scale international collaborations.

Professor Becker has published many peer-reviewed papers in the field, was a member of the ESHRE Guideline Development Group for the Management of Endometriosis, and is an expert witness for the NICE Guideline Development for Endometriosis.
