• Will I need a general anaesthetic?

  Not necessarily. Some types can be done in an outpatient clinic with a local anaesthetic, while others are more commonly carried out under sedation or a general anaesthetic. Your gynaecologist will advise on the best option for the method you're having.

• Can I still get pregnant afterwards?

  It's unlikely but not impossible, and pregnancy after endometrial ablation carries a higher risk of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. You should keep using contraception until you reach menopause.

• How will it affect my periods?

  Most women find their periods become noticeably lighter, and around 1 in 3 stop having periods altogether. Full confirmation can take a little longer, up to 3 months, before the change in your bleeding is fully clear.

• When can I go back to work?

  Many women find they need roughly 2 to 5 days off, depending on how physically demanding their job is. If your work involves heavy lifting or standing for long periods, it may be worth easing back in gradually.

• When should I get medical help after the procedure?

  Contact your GP, hospital, or NHS 111 if you have stinging or frequent urination (possibly a urine infection), heavy bleeding with a fever (possibly a womb infection), or lower abdominal pain with a fever, which can signal a more serious complication and may need hospital admission.
