About
Alan graduated in Medicine with Commendation from Glasgow University having previously graduated in Pharmacology. He trained in Glasgow followed by a Fellowship in Clinical Electrophysiology in Philadelphia.
Alan was then appointed Consultant Cardiologist in 1987 and set up the Arrhythmia Service at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He is also trained in angioplasty and stenting. He is currently a Consultant at both the Golden Jubilee National Hospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary providing both a specialised arrhythmia service including radiofrequency ablation and also undertaking intervention in patients with coronary artery disease.
Other interests
Alan's main interest is in the treatment of rhythm disorders including palpitation and blackouts. He is one of only three Consultants in the West of Scotland with a specific expertise in the interventional management of fast heart rates providing a supra-regional electrophysiology/ablation service for different arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation. His other main interest is in the investigation and treatment of patients with coronary disease presenting with chest pain and/or breathlessness.

Research
Alan has published in many peer reviewed journals particularly in the area of disturbances of heart rhythm. His Doctorate thesis was on the interventional management of life-threatening heart rhythms. He is a member of a number of societies including the British Cardiovascular Society, Scottish Cardiac Society, British Heart Rhythm Association, Familial Arrhythmia Network Scotland and the British Cardiovascular Interventional Society.
