By this stage, many women feel they have settled into a life pattern. But the competing demands of family, career and relationships can make you feel unbalanced and uneasy about the future.

If you haven't started a family, you may be thinking about doing so, and perhaps anxious about your ability to conceive later in life.

As Dr Annie Evans explains, now might be the time to take steps towards preserving your fertility for the future. On the other hand, you might be thinking about the health of your daughters as they grow into young women themselves.

Your menstrual cycle may change and heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) can take some women by surprise in the years leading up to menopause. Menopause itself may arrive earlier than expected.

Depression, anxiety and a loss of confidence can also creep in as our bodies and hormones change. It's important that when so much of your attention is demanded by others, that you don't forget to focus on yourself.
