However if it grows in size and begins to cause you discomfort, your consultant may recommend removal.

What happens during epididymal surgery?

Removal of an epididymal cyst is usually done under general anaestheticSpinal or local anaesthetic with sedation may also be used. Your consultant will make a small above your scrotum to access the cyst and carefully remove it from any surrounding tissue. They will close any wound with stitches. The cyst may be sent to a lab for analysis.

After epididymal surgery

Epididymal surgery is usually done as a day case meaning you will be able to go home the day of your procedure. You will not be able to drive so please arrange for someone to take you home.

You may feel some discomfort in the first few days. Take any pain relief medication as prescribed. Wearing supportive underpants or an athletic support may also ease discomfort.

Keep your surgical wound clean and dry for the first 24 hours. After that time you can remove the dressing and have a short bath or shower.

Avoid any strenuous activity or heavy lifting for 10 -14 days. Discuss any return to work with your consultant.

Most people make a good recovery after epididymal surgery. As with any surgical procedure there could be complications:

  • Swelling
  • Drainage from the surgical wound
  • Infection
  • Damage to the epididymis
  • Reoccurrence of the cyst
