If you have a dislocated shoulder, this operation repairs the lining of the damaged shoulder joint to make it stable again.

Shoulder stabilisation surgery is performed when a patient presents with recurrent shoulder dislocations or episodes of instability. Shoulder stability relies on key structures such as the musculature, the labrum (cartilage) and the bony structures. Shoulder stabilisation surgery aims to repair some of these structures to improve shoulder stability.

What are the benefits of shoulder stabilisation surgery?

The aim of this surgery is to improve the shoulder stability. This will lead to reduced episodes of instability or dislocation. It is also anticipated that this procedure will improve pain and function of the shoulder allowing you to return to activities.

Is shoulder stability surgery right for me?

The decision to have shoulder stability surgery will be a joint decision between you and your orthopedic surgeon. There are many factors that influence this decision and our clinicians will guide you through this process.

What happens during stabilisation surgery?

Shoulder surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic. Often the nerves to the shoulder are also numbed (called a block) to improve pain control. The procedure can be done arthroscopically (key hole surgery) using several very small incisions. The torn shoulder lining (labrum) is repaired back to the bone. Occasionally in the case of a Laterjet procedure a bone graft may be used from within the shoulder. The details of your specific surgery will be discussed between you and your orthopaedic surgeon.

After your surgery

Immediately after your surgery you will be taken to the recovery area. When you have fully woken up from the anesthetic a nurse will take you to your room. Your arm will be in a sling for a length of time to allow the shoulder to begin healing in a comfortable position.

Recovery

Our team of specialist physiotherapists will provide expert treatment, rehabilitation and advice during your hospital stay, and if appropriate follow-up as an outpatient to support your full recovery.

Short Term Recovery

You will go home once you are able to mobilise safely and you are medically fit. You will discuss the length of your hospital stay and any concern with the consultant prior to the operation.

Long Term Recovery

Your recovery will be guided by physiotherapists and follow up consultations with your surgeon.
