What does varicose vein stripping involve?

  • Various types of anaesthetic may be used. Your consultant in Derby will discuss the options with you during your consultation
  • Varicose vein stripping usually takes about 1 hour per leg
  • Your consultant may mark the veins to be stripped using a waterproof pen
  • Your consultant will make an incision in your groin or at the back of your knee in order to remove the varicose vein
  • Several incisions may need to be made, depending on the size of the vein
  • Your leg will also be wrapped in a bandage that keeps pressure applied to the site. This helps reduce the risk of bleeding or excessive bruising.

After your varicose vein surgery and recovery

  • After your procedure, you will be taken to the recovery area until your anaesthetic has worn off
  • Most patients experience a stinging or burning sensation after surgery. It's unusual for the leg to be painful
  • Somebody will need to drive you home, so please make sure you have made travel arrangements before your surgery
  • It's normal to experience some soreness and discomfort for up to 2 weeks after your surgery
  • Regular daily exercise, such as walking, is recommended. This may feel uncomfortable but exercise will encourage your leg to return to normal quicker
  • You should be able to drive within 48 hours of your surgery
  • You should be able to bath or shower within 48 hours of your surgery
  • Depending on your job, you should be able to return to work within 1-3 weeks
  • Your vascular consultant will discuss everything about the recovery process during your consultation.

Complications and risks

Although rare, every surgical procedure carries some degree of risk. Specific complications of varicose vein stripping include:

  • Wound infection
  • Fluid lead from the wound
  • Nerve injuries
  • DVT (Deep vein thrombosis)
  • Recurrent varicose veins.
