About
Mr Krishna Lingam graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1986 and undertook 12 years of postgraduate surgical training in the West of Scotland. During this period, he trained under several prominent surgeons and gained extensive experience across a broad spectrum of surgical specialties, including upper and lower gastrointestinal surgery, vascular surgery, and endocrine surgery. This breadth of exposure provided him with a strong foundation as a well‑rounded general surgeon.
In 1994, Mr Lingam successfully completed a doctorate thesis focused on the surgical management of malignant melanoma, further enhancing his academic and research credentials.
He was appointed as a Consultant General Surgeon with a specialist interest in vascular surgery in 1999 at the former Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, now the Royal Derby Hospital. He continues to practise across general, vascular and endocrine surgery, offering comprehensive assessment and surgical management for a wide range of conditions.
Mr Lingam’s surgical expertise includes:
- General surgical investigations and treatments, including assessment of rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, endoscopy, and excision of benign skin and soft‑tissue lesions (“lumps and bumps”)
- Treatment of common anorectal conditions, such as haemorrhoids and anal fissures
- Hernia surgery, including abdominal and inguinal hernia repair (open and laparoscopic)
- Varicose vein surgery
- Laparoscopic gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy)
- Bowel resection surgery for benign colorectal conditions
- Major vascular procedures, including abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, arterial bypass procedures and carotid artery surgery
- Endocrine surgery, including thyroid and parathyroid operations
Mr Lingam continues to deliver high‑quality, patient‑centred surgical care across his areas of expertise.
Other interests
Since his appointment as a Consultant in 1999, Mr Lingam has played a pivotal role in the development and expansion of the vascular surgery service at the Royal Derby Hospital. Under his leadership, the vascular unit has grown into a well‑established service comprising seven consultant vascular surgeons supported by six interventional radiologists, delivering comprehensive vascular care for the South Derbyshire population.
In 2013, Mr Lingam successfully led the integration of vascular services across North and South Derbyshire, creating a fully unified, county‑wide vascular network. This integrated model has improved service coordination, enhanced access to specialist care, and strengthened the delivery of high‑quality vascular services across the whole of Derbyshire.

Mr Lingam has published widely in both vascular surgery and the surgical management of malignant melanoma, contributing to book chapters and peer‑reviewed journals.
He has supervised Doctor of Medicine (DM) theses and remains actively committed to supporting junior colleagues in their academic development, guiding them in presenting research at national and international meetings. He continues to contribute to the academic activities of the Vascular Medicine Department at the Royal Derby Hospital.
