Find out what the Zio XT heart monitor involves, why you might need one, how it's fitted, and what happens during and after you wear it at home.
What is a Zio® XT cardiac monitor?
The Zio® XT is an external, non-invasive ECG (electrocardiogram) monitor that records your heart rhythm for up to 14 days.
Who is suitable for a Zio® XT cardiac monitor?
It is typically used on patients who may be asymptomatic or who may suffer from short-lived symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, light-headedness, presyncope, syncope, fatigue, or anxiety. It's also suitable for any patient requiring ambulatory cardiac monitoring.
What does the test involve?
The Zio® XT cardiac monitor requires less than 5 minutes of topical skin preparation to ensure good contact between the device and the skin. The patient presses the button on the Zio® XT whenever they experience symptoms during the wear time.
As the Zio® XT is an external, non-invasive ECG monitor there is no pain experienced and no recovery process from having it fitted.
Specific risks and complications of using a Zio® XT cardiac monitor
During very hot weather or excessive exercise when the patient may perspire heavily, there is a risk of the Zio XT monitor falling off before the end of the prescribed wear time. This however poses no safety risk to patients.
Are there any alternative procedures?
Implantable Loop Recorders (ILRs) offer longer-term monitoring, for up to 3 years. There is no patient button to landmark symptoms on the rhythm strip. This is an invasive procedure as the device requires a clinician for implantation and extraction.
FAQs
-
Will it stop me doing normal things while I wear it?
No, not after the first 24 hours. You can shower, exercise and sleep as normal, since the device is water-resistant, though it shouldn't be fully submerged.
-
What's the difference between this and a Holter monitor?
A Holter monitor is typically worn for 24 to 48 hours, sometimes up to 7 days, and is usually carried in a pouch or worn around your neck. The Zio XT is a patch worn under your clothes for up to 14 days.
-
Is there a longer-term monitoring option?
Yes, an implantable loop recorder (ILR) can monitor your heart for up to around 3 years. However, it's invasive, needs a clinician to fit and remove it, and doesn't have a button for you to mark symptoms.
-
Do I need to press the button every time I feel a symptom?
It's helpful, since it marks exactly when you felt something in the recording, but the device records every heartbeat throughout your wear time whether or not you press the button.
-
What if the patch feels itchy or comes off?
Mild itching is fairly common and usually nothing to worry about, but tell your consultant or GP if it becomes severe or you develop hives or blisters. If it comes off early in hot weather or after heavy sweating, this isn't a safety risk, but let your clinical team know.
-
How long until I get my results?
Your doctor usually receives a full report within a few days of you posting the device back, and they'll be in touch to discuss what it shows and any next steps.
