As we get older the skin around the eyes can stretch and sag.

Eyelid reshaping (or blepharoplasty or Eye Lift) is designed to counteract bags and wrinkles and restore a more youthful look, by removing skin and tissue from the upper and lower eyelids.

In upper eyelid surgery, the surgeon makes cuts (incisions) in the eyelid’s natural crease. Skin, and sometimes fat, is then removed, before the cuts are rejoined with very fine stitches. The scar remains hidden in the eyelid crease.

In lower eyelid surgery, fat and excess skin is removed from eye bags via a cut on the outside of the lower eyelid, just below the lashes. Sometimes this cut can be made on the inside of the eyelid. It is possible to have both upper and lower eyelid surgery at the same time.

When you have an eyelid procedure:

  • You may have either a general or local anaesthetic
  • You usually go home the same day, but if you have upper and lower eyelid surgery together you may need an overnight stay in hospital
  • Ten to fourteen days off work may be required
