Hospital services provided for consultants
In accordance with the requirements of the Competition & Markets Authority Private Healthcare Market Investigation Order 2014 (the Order) the details of services offered by the hospital to our consultant partners are detailed below.
Consulting rooms are made available to referring clinicians or those that hold practising privileges at the hospital at a rate of £25.00 per hour or part thereof, which represents a fair market rate. Consulting rooms are made available on a non-discriminatory basis and on equivalent terms in accordance with the Order.
Discounts are made available for all consulting room users, discounts can be accessed by:
- Agreeing to prompt payment terms for the settlement of invoices (-20%)
- Advance payment of quarterly consulting room requirements (-20%)
Both discounts are available to all consultants and can be combined to make a 40% discount in the aggregate.
Accommodation for consultants’ medical secretarial staff is also made available at this hospital at a rental rate of £268.00 per month, which represents a fair market rate. Such accommodation is provided on a non-discriminatory basis and on equivalent terms in accordance with the Order.
Hot desks are also made available at the hospital at a rate of £1.70 plus VAT per hour or part thereof, which represents a fair market rate. Hot desks are made available at a non-discriminatory basis and on equivalent terms in accordance with the Order.
Medical secretarial services are made available to our consultant partners at a rate of £15.00 plus VAT per hour, which represents a fair market rate. Medical secretarial services are provided on a non-discriminatory basis and on equivalent terms in accordance with the Order.
Corporate hospitality
All consultants are invited to attend an Annual General Meeting (AGM). The AGM is hosted offsite and food and drinks are provided. The cost for the event is £74 per head.
The Medical Advisory Committee are invited to attend an annual dinner in recognition of their contribution to Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital. The cost of the event is £42 per head and all MAC members are invited to attend.
All consultants are invited to attend periodic Supper Club evenings hosted by the hospital senior management team. The event costs £40 per head.
National Advisory Roles
The National Medical Advisory Group (NMAG) was established in June 2020 and supports the development of Nuffield Health’s strategy and policies, providing advice on clinical best practice, new technology and procedures and also giving specialty-specific expert advice.
The NMAG is constituted by consultants representing different specialties across Nuffield Health Hospitals. Members are invited to join the NMAG by Wouter Van den Brande, Medical Effectiveness & Innovation Director. Where advisory services are requested from and provided to Nuffield Health by NMAG consultant members, they are paid at a rate of £350 per hour.
The NMAG members for Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital are Mrs Caroline Overton and Mr Nigel Mercer.
Nuffield Health have a bank of consultants who act as expert professional case reviewers, also known as ‘medical reviewers’, who provide ad hoc medical advice to Nuffield Health and review patient pathways and care. Medical reviewers are paid a rate of £350 per hour for carrying out case reviews and providing advice to Nuffield Health.
The medical reviewers for Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital are Dr Mark Thornton and Dr Richard Bateman.
Paid Advisory Roles
To support delivery of clinical services in the hospital, the following consultants hold a paid advisory role for Nuffield Health Bristol hospital:
- Dr Tom Creed, Consultant Gastroenterologist, is paid £6,000 per annum for providing advisory services relating to JAG compliance and Endoscopy services to Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital
- Dr R Lush, Haematologist, is paid £5,250 per annum for providing advisory services relating to haematological issues and blood transfusion advice to Nuffield Health hospitals in Cheltenham and Bristol.
- Dr A Rye, Haematologist, is paid £5,250 per annum for providing advisory services relating to haematological issues and blood transfusion advice to Nuffield Health hospitals in Cheltenham and Bristol.
- Dr Philippa Moore, Consultant Medical Microbiologist, is paid £7,200 per annum for providing advisory services relating to Infection Control and Prevention to Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital.
- Dr S Lewis, Dr A Duffen, Dr A Middleditch, Dr N Joshi and Dr A Johnstone provide pre-operative Anaesthetic assessments for patients as required ahead of surgery at a rate of £500 per month
- Mrs C Overton works as Gynaecology advisor on the National Medical Advisory Group to Nuffield Health at an hourly rate of £350/hr.
Educational Grants
Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital is proud to support medical professionals in their pursuit of continuing professional education. The Hospital’s Medical Society approves grants, made from Nuffield Health resources, in order to advance and ensure clinical safety through consultant attendance at relevant educational conferences and events.
Educational Grants have been awarded to 5 consultants at this hospital to date.
