The South West Peninsula Radiology Study Day is a free, full‑day educational event bringing together radiology clinical expertise and regulatory training to support high‑quality, safe, and appropriate use of diagnostic imaging.

The day is split into two complementary sessions:

  • Morning: Consultant‑led clinical radiology insights relevant to referral quality, imaging pathways, and clinical decision‑making
  • Afternoon: Formal IR(ME)R training for non‑medical referrers using imaging involving ionising radiation

The event is designed primarily for non‑medical referrers across the South West, with GPs warmly welcomed to attend for education and professional development.

Who should attend

Primary audience – Non‑Medical Referrers (NMRs):

  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Physiotherapists
  • Chiropractors
  • Osteopaths
  • Podiatrists and Chiropodists
  • Other non‑medical clinicians involved in requesting imaging involving ionising radiation

General Practitioners:
GPs are welcome to attend for clinical learning and knowledge update.
Please note: IR(ME)R training is not required for GPs, but attendance is encouraged.

Purpose of the study day

All Non‑Medical Referrers must complete appropriate IR(ME)R training to be entitled to refer patients for imaging using ionising radiation within Nuffield Health Imaging Departments.

This study day supports:

  • Enhanced clinical understanding of radiology and imaging pathways
  • Safe and appropriate use of imaging involving ionising radiation
  • Improved referral quality and clinical decision‑making
  • Compliance with IRR 2017 and IR(ME)R 2017 regulations
  • High standards of patient safety and clinical governance

Key learning outcomes

By attending, delegates will gain:

  • Improved understanding of clinical indications for imaging through consultant‑led specialty insights
  • Knowledge of radiation protection principles and justification of imaging referrals
  • Understanding of the benefits and risks of imaging examinations involving ionising radiation, including radiation dose awareness
  • An overview of IRR 2017 and IR(ME)R 2017 regulations
  • Clarity on the responsibilities and accountability of Non‑Medical Referrers
  • Awareness of professional and legislative duties within medical imaging practice
