The goal of cryotherapy is to eradicate prostate cancer by freezing the prostate cells.
Cryotherapy for prostate cancer
An exciting new development in the treatment of prostate cancer which is minimally invasive and so has fewer complications than surgery.
Cryotherapy aims to eradicate prostate cancer by actually freezing the prostate cells. Guided by ultrasound the doctor inserts needles into the prostate gland. These produce very cold temperatures. Freezing destroys the entire prostate, including cancerous tissue.
Cryotherapy for skin lesions
Cryotherapy is also a common treatment for skin lesions. The idea is to freeze the abnormal lesion and a small amount of surrounding normal skin. When the frozen cells subsequently thaw out, the skin cells essentially die and regenerate themselves over time.
There are many ways to effect the treatment. The commonest method uses liquid nitrogen which drops the temperature of skin quickly to way below freezing point. The nitrogen is applied through a "gun" that sprays the liquid onto the skin or it is applied with a cotton bud or similar.
It is very commonly used to treat sun spots which are premalignant skin lesions caused by sun exposure and damage from Cryotherapy occurs only on the surface layer of the skin called the epidermis.
After Cryotherapy, blistering and redness often occur and the site can look quite ugly for a week or more, the area can look like it had been burned. In time new fresh skin cells grow out and regenerate the area that was treated.
Cryotherapy is also used for lesions unrelated to sun damage, such as warts or skin tags.
