Hip Revision is a procedure to take out your old hip replacement and put in a new one.

What is hip revision surgery?

Hip revision surgery is considered when a previously implanted hip replacement is no longer fit for purpose. There are many reasons this may be the case.  At Nuffield Health, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, our experienced orthopaedic consultants will perform a full examination, possibly utilising medical imaging, to determine the extent of your problem. They may recommend surgery if the injury does not respond to conservative treatment.

What are the benefits of hip revision surgery?

The objectives of this surgery is to replace the previously implanted hip replacement, and improve your pain and function, allowing you to in time return to activities.

Is hip revision surgery right for me?

Your consultant will determine if your injury requires surgery or not. Depending on their findings, some may be managed conservatively. However, some may require surgery.

What happens during and after the treatment?

Hip revision is usually done under general anaesthetic but a spinal block could also be used and you will meet one of our anaesthetists prior to the operation. Your surgeon will make an incision on the outside of your hip to remove and clean the damaged joint surfaces. These surfaces are replaced with new artificial implants. The surgical site is closed using stitches and dressings. After the procedure you will be transferred into the hands of our dedicated nursing team who will look after you in the recovery area and inpatients ward.

Recovery

Our team of specialist physiotherapists will provide expert treatment and rehabilitation and advice during your hospital stay. If appropriate, there will be outpatient follow up support to aid your full recovery.

Short-term recovery

You will be able to walk on the operated leg as soon as you feel able to do so. Usually this will involve the use of walking aides at first. You will have expert physiotherapy input during your hospital stay to facilitate this. You will discuss the length of your hospital stay and any concerns with the consultant prior to the operation. You will go home once you are able to mobilise safely and you are medically fit.

Long-term recovery

Your recovery will be guided by physiotherapists and follow up consultations with your surgeon.
