About 1 in 20 smear tests show mild cell changes.

A smear test or cervical screening test is used to detect pre-cancerous cells in your cervix (the entrance to your womb). Regular screening monitors changes in the cells. An abnormal smear result could indicate changes have occurred.

About 1 in 20 tests show mild cell changes.* If your results show mild changes (mild dyskaryosis), your GP may recommend more frequent screening to more closely monitor the changes.

In some cases cell changes can be caused by a human papilloma virus (HPV). In most cases the virus goes away on its own.

When the results of your screening show moderate or severe cell changes (moderate or severe dyskaryosis) your GP may refer you for a more thorough examination.

Don’t worry - abnormal results rarely mean cancer has developed. Our expert Consultant Gynaecologists understand your concerns around receiving an abnormal result. They will conduct a thorough examination and advise you if any followup procedures are needed.

In some cases your consultant may recommend a colposcopy to closer examine the changes in your cervix.
