Foot and ankle surgery at Glasgow Hospital
- Overview
If pain, instability, or a deformity in your foot or ankle is limiting your daily activities, our specialist foot and ankle consultants offer a wide range of procedures designed to restore function, correct the underlying problem, and help you move comfortably again.
Our consultant orthopaedic surgeons perform a variety of procedures to treat the full spectrum of foot and ankle conditions. Some of the most common surgeries include:
- Bunion surgery (Bunionectomy): A procedure to remove the painful bony bump at the base of the big toe and realign the toe joint to its correct position.
- Ankle arthroscopy (Keyhole Surgery): A minimally invasive technique that uses a tiny camera and specialised instruments to diagnose and treat problems inside the ankle joint, such as removing loose cartilage or clearing out scar tissue.
- Ankle fusion (Arthrodesis): A surgical procedure to relieve the pain of severe ankle arthritis by removing the damaged cartilage and fusing the main ankle bones together into one solid bone, creating a stable and pain-free platform for walking.
- Ankle ligament repair: Surgery to tighten and reinforce the ligaments on the outside of the ankle that have been stretched or torn from repeated sprains, aiming to cure chronic ankle instability and prevent the ankle from 'giving way'.
- Achilles tendon repair or reconstruction: An operation to stitch the ends of a ruptured (torn) Achilles tendon back together, or to remove damaged tissue in cases of chronic tendon pain (tendinopathy).
- Hammer Toe Correction: A procedure to straighten a toe that has buckled into a claw-like position, relieving pain and pressure, particularly when wearing shoes.
- Ankle replacement (Total Ankle Arthroplasty): A procedure for severe ankle arthritis where the damaged joint is replaced with a prosthesis made of metal and plastic, to relieve pain while preserving the joint's up-and-down motion.
- Fracture Fixation: The surgical repair of a broken bone in the foot or ankle, where the bone fragments are put back into their correct alignment and held in place with plates, screws, or pins while they heal.
