Flat foot occurs when the arch of your foot is very low or flattens, causing your foot to fall inward.

Not all patients with flat feet experience pain and some patients do not require correction. Both children and adults can have flat feet.

Flat feet can cause problems when muscles and ligaments are stretched. Areas that might be affected are:

  • Knee, hip or back
  • Calf (back of your lower leg)
  • Outside edge of your foot
  • Your arch
  • Inside of your ankle

Supportive shoes can ease discomfort by positioning your foot correctly. Shoe inserts called orthotics can help restore the biometric balance to your legs and feet and realign your posture. In rare cases a brace or surgery may be needed.
