• Can an ECG diagnose a heart condition on its own?

  Not usually on its own. Your doctor combines your ECG results with your symptoms, medical history and sometimes other tests to reach a diagnosis.

• How long will I need to wear a portable ECG monitor?

  Usually 24 to 48 hours, though it can be up to 7 days depending on what your doctor needs to check. You won't be able to bathe or shower while wearing it.

• What happens if I can't exercise for a stress ECG?

  You'll be given a medicine that raises your heart rate instead, so you still get the same information without needing to use a treadmill or exercise bike.

• Does an ECG hurt?

  No, an ECG itself is painless. You might feel brief mild discomfort, similar to removing a plaster, when the electrodes are taken off afterwards.

• Will I need other tests?

  You might. An ECG is often just one part of the picture, so your doctor may recommend further tests before making a diagnosis or deciding on treatment.

• What if my results aren't normal?

  An unusual result can be a sign of a heart condition, but exactly what it means depends on which part of the recording wasn't normal. Your doctor or specialist will talk you through your results and explain what happens next.
