About

Mr Shyamsunder Kolvekar is a renowned consultant cardiothoracic surgeon, specialising in coronary arterial bypass grafting, valve repair and aortic valve replacement alongside chest wall deformities and lung cancer. Being based in central London, he practices at Nuffield Health at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital among other private practices and continues his practice at his NHS bases at Barts Heart Centre at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and The Royal Free London Hospital.
Mr Kolvekar is internationally-recognised specifically for the adult NUSS procedure that treats pectus excavatum (where a breastbone is sunken into the chest) and prides himself in innovative new techniques for this treatment to allow better pain control and reduced risk from surgery.

Apart from the NUSS procedure, Mr Kolvekar’s special interests also include open beating-heart surgery, cardiac arrhythmias and minimally-invasive cardiac surgery. He has also been immersed in ischaemic pre-conditioning of the heart and has thoracic practice in pneumothorax and pleural effusion.

Mr Kolvekar is a senior lecturer at University College London, where he lectures and teaches the NUSS procedure and connate minimally invasive surgery to surgeons from across the world. He also has research published in various international peer-reviewed journals and books. Furthermore, he was also the medical advisor for the BBC hit series Holby City, making sure all the terms and scenarios are correct. He has also recently been awarded with doctor of the year 2025
