Dr Gautam Kulkarni

Dr Gautam Kulkarni is a Consultant Paediatrician with over 25 years’ experience in paediatrics and adolescent health. He provides specialist opinions for children from birth to 18 years of age and is known for his holistic, child-centred approach to care. His specialist interests include allergy and neurology, with dedicated clinics in these areas.

Dr Kulkarni is the editor of Recent Advances in Paediatrics, a highly regarded book series published every two to three years to educate paediatricians and postgraduate trainees on the latest developments in the field. He is committed to ensuring that every child benefits from up-to-date evidence and guidelines, while recognising that paediatrics is both a science and an art. He places strong emphasis on taking a detailed history from both parents and children to understand the root cause of symptoms, aiming to minimise unnecessary investigations and avoid uncomfortable procedures wherever possible.

He welcomes referrals for a wide range of paediatric concerns, from early infancy issues such as feeding difficulties, reflux, allergies and constipation, to more complex conditions in older children and teenagers. His expertise includes the management of headaches, abdominal pain, epilepsy and other neurological conditions. He has a particular interest in adolescent health and the complex relationship between psychological wellbeing and physical symptoms.

Following his initial paediatric training at the University of Pune, where he was awarded first prize, he undertook research into mother-to-child transmission of HIV as part of a pioneering study aimed at reducing transmission rates. He later completed further specialist training in London, gaining extensive experience in allergy, epilepsy and neurology. He worked for ten years as an NHS Consultant at Darent Valley Hospital and Queen Mary’s Hospital Sidcup, where he established specialist clinics in allergy and epilepsy.

Dr Kulkarni now practises privately while continuing his academic work in editorial and teaching roles.
