About
Dr Elizabeth Bird-Lieberman is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. She graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2000. While training in General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, she achieved a PhD from the University of Cambridge (2010). Following the completion of specialist training, she took up a post as a Clinical Lecturer in Translational Medicine and Therapeutics in Cambridge before taking up a consultant post at Oxford University Hospitals in 2013. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London.
Dr Bird-Lieberman is the Deputy Guideline Lead for the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) and will take on the leadership role in 2025. Within this leadership role, she contributes to shaping the future of the profession and ensuring consistent national practice based on the best currently available evidence. This role includes membership in the BSG Council and Clinical Standards and Services Committee and a seat on the Gut editorial board. She is also the Academic Foundation Lead for the Oxford University Clinical Academic Graduate School and a nationally accredited Bowel Cancer Screener. She organises the gastroenterology teaching for the Oxford Graduate Entry Medical School and is heavily involved in teaching endoscopy to the next generation of endoscopy specialists.
Dr Bird-Lieberman is renowned for being an empathetic, strong communicator who focuses on providing her patients with the best possible care.

Research
Dr Bird-Lieberman undertakes research in the early detection of gastrointestinal cancers and is an honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford. Her PhD thesis focused on the early detection of oesophageal cancer through molecular imaging and biomarker development and she continues to work on early cancer detection throughout the gastrointestinal tract.
