What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a profession whose aim is to encourage and support the return to normal following illness, surgery, disease or trauma. It can be effective in the treatment of a range of muscle, joint and nerve conditions.

Physiotherapists use a wide range of techniques such as manual therapy and exercise prescription to maintain health for people of all ages, helping patients to manage pain and prevent disease.

We can offer expertise in upper limb and hand rehabilitation, pain management programmes and post-surgical recovery. Many of our therapists are also trained in Pilates, Acupuncture and Joint Manipulation, carrying out thorough biomechanical assessments to enhance and optimize function.

We have strong links with many orthopaedic consultants and have an excellent track record in the rehabilitation of upper and lower limb sports injuries. In addition, we can offer pre and post natal treatment and advice as well as vertigo and balance rehabilitation with our vestibular specialist.

Karen Ritchie

Physiotherapy Manager

How can I help you improve your health?

As an active individual Karen has always had a keen interest in human movement. Her fascination with pain, movement and performance continues to drive her to assist in changing ‘unhelpful’ movement patterns and behaviours whether in a pre/rehabilitation setting.

Changing attitudes to health and fitness has driven Karen to explore physiotherapy techniques in the treatment of these chronic movement patterns and persistent pain in the increasing incidence of varied ‘chronic pain’ including shoulder, knee, neck and back pain.

She is currently continuing to enhance her skills in manual therapy and biopsychosocial models to ensure the best care and outcome for each and every one of her patients.

Karen is an ultra marathon runner so has experience with training plans leading up to a range of running race types. She is driven to help develop training plans for others who wish to follow suit injury free.

Karen's special interests include:

  • Chronic pain
  • Neuroscience of pain
  • CBT
  • Visceral manipulation/SCS
