What is menopause?
Menopause is the time that marks the end of your menstrual cycles. It is diagnosed after you have gone 12 months without a menstrual period. Menopause can happen at any age for several different reasons, but the average age in the UK is 51. Menopause is a natural biological process; however, the decline in hormone levels can lead to significant symptoms and increase the risk of certain health conditions. Early menopause, whether caused by surgery or premature ovarian insufficiency, can present additional health considerations that are important to address.
In the years leading up to menopause, many women experience a transitional stage known as perimenopause. During this time, hormone levels fluctuate and symptoms may begin to occur, even though menstrual periods have not yet stopped completely.
Can you test for menopause?
Yes, a blood test can be done to test your follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) level to see if you are menopausal. Your FSH levels can fluctuate during perimenopause and rise dramatically as your ovaries begin to shut down at menopause. However, for most women over the age of 45, a blood test is not needed to diagnose perimenopause or menopause.
Do you need to see your doctor?
Regular health checks and preventative screenings are among the most important things you can do for yourself alongside a healthy lifestyle. These may include cervical screening and breast screening when you are invited for these.
Seeing a doctor who specialises in this area can be of real benefit if you are experiencing symptoms and need expert advice to navigate the issues you might be facing.
During your consultation, Dr Julie Kite will take the time to listen and understand your symptoms, medical history and overall health to determine any treatment and investigations that may be appropriate. Everyone is different and the right treatment sometimes takes time and expertise.
If you have a more complex medical or family history, being a menopause specialist means Dr Kite can discuss risks and benefits of treatments with you and work collaboratively with any other medical professionals involved in your care.
No GP referral is required to book an appointment with Dr Julie Kite.
