Prof Abdo Karim Tourkmani

Prof Abdo Karim Tourkmani is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in cataract surgery, laser refractive surgery, cornea transplant surgery and anterior segment reconstructive surgery.

His currents posts are Substantive Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Visiting Professor in Ulster University.

Prof Tourkmani finished his training in Ophthalmology in 2011 in Fundacion Jimenez Diaz (Madrid), and he obtained his Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology degree. He completed two one-year fellowships in cornea transplant, laser eye surgery, and cataract surgery from Hospital Luis Sanchez Bulnes (Mexico) and Southampton General Hospital (UK).

In February 2018 he was awarded the 'Surgeon of the Month Award' by the International Society of Refractive Surgery / American Academy of Ophthalmology, for his skills in cornea, cataract, anterior segment and refractive surgery, being at the time (age 34) the second youngest to ever achieve such a recognition.

In 2019, he obtained the prestigious Postgraduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery from Ulster University, passing with Distinction. He holds currently a Visiting Professor role.

In 2023, he completed a Masters in Healthcare Management and also became Fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgery.

He has also interest in research, having published (and being currently involved) in investigative projects, mainly regarding keratoconus and Fuchs endothelial dystrophy.
