About
Mr Matyas Fehervari is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon specialising in the treatment of gallstones and bile duct stones, acid reflux and hiatus hernia, obesity and metabolic disease, and abdominal wall & groin hernias. His practice combines Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG), bariatric and metabolic surgery, advanced laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery, enabling him to offer a comprehensive range of modern minimally invasive Upper Gastrointestinal and weight-loss treatments.
Mr Fehervari has a particular interest in gallbladder and bile duct disease, including biliary colic, acute and chronic cholecystitis, gallstone pancreatitis and common bile duct stones. He performs laparoscopic and robotic cholecystectomy, intraoperative cholangiography and, where appropriate, laparoscopic or robotic common bile duct exploration. This allows selected patients with gallbladder and bile duct stones to be treated during a single operation, potentially avoiding the need for multiple procedures.
He provides comprehensive assessment and treatment for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and hiatus hernia. His reflux practice includes gastroscopy, Bravo™ wireless pH capsule monitoring, oesophageal pH impedance studies and high-resolution oesophageal manometry, together with laparoscopic and robotic fundoplication, LINX® magnetic sphincter augmentation, hiatus hernia repair and revisional anti-reflux surgery. He also assesses patients with dysphagia, dyspepsia, bloating, suspected small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), regurgitation and unexplained upper abdominal symptoms.
Bariatric and metabolic surgery forms a major part of Mr Fehervari's specialist practice. He provides comprehensive assessment and treatment for obesity and weight-related health problems, offering gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, revisional bariatric surgery and Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG). His experience across both conventional bariatric surgery and endoscopic weight-loss treatment means that patients can be assessed for a range of options rather than being directed towards a single procedure. His bariatric practice also includes the assessment and management of weight regain following previous bariatric surgery, with treatment tailored to the underlying cause and individual patient.
Mr Fehervari established the Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) service within his NHS practice, developing the clinical pathway and introducing this minimally invasive, incision-free weight-loss treatment. ESG complements his established bariatric surgical practice and provides an additional option for appropriately selected patients seeking a less invasive approach to weight loss.
He also has a specialist interest in treating patients suffereinf complications using modern medical weight-loss treatments, including GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists such as Mounjaro®. He assesses and manages Upper Gastrointestinal and surgical complications that can occur during rapid or medication-assisted weight loss, including gallstones, acute cholecystitis, bile duct stones, gallstone pancreatitis, reflux and other gastrointestinal symptoms. His combined expertise in bariatric surgery, ESG, gallbladder surgery and reflux disease is particularly valuable when these conditions overlap.
Mr Fehervari also performs laparoscopic and robotic abdominal wall hernia surgery, including inguinal, umbilical, epigastric and incisional hernia repair. Robotic techniques are incorporated into his Upper GI, bariatric, reflux, gallbladder and hernia practice where appropriate, complementing established laparoscopic techniques rather than replacing them.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Fehervari is an internationally recognised academic surgeon. He holds two Master's degrees and a PhD, has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications with over 4,500 citations, and his research has received multiple national awards. His work has been published in leading international journals including The Lancet, Annals of Surgery, the British Journal of Surgery, Gastroenterology, Surgical Endoscopy and the International Journal of Surgery. He is ranked among the top 5% of the world's most highly cited scientists.
Mr Fehervari is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London, Clinical Lecturer and Year 5 Surgery Lead at Kent & Medway Medical School, Acute Care Block Lead for King's Medical School, and Clinical Lead for the South East Endoscopy Training Hub. He received the Teaching Excellence Award in 2025. His NHS clinical leadership has also included serving as Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Lead, alongside developing and leading new clinical services and patient pathways.
Mr Fehervari's approach is centred on selecting the most appropriate treatment for each individual patient. By combining bariatric and metabolic surgery, Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty, gallbladder and bile duct surgery, anti-reflux surgery and modern minimally invasive techniques, he is able to provide comprehensive, evidence-based care across a broad range of Upper Gastrointestinal conditions.
