About

Matija Krkovic is a senior Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon working at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Education

After completing higher specialist training in General and Orthopaedic Trauma surgery in 2001, Mr Krkovic has undertaken several sub-specialist fellowships in Germany and Switzerland learning from world-leading surgeons.

He then completed his PhD at the University Medical Centre of Ljubljana in 2006 investigating ‘Electrophysiological monitoring of the ulnar nerve during osteosynthesis of distal humerus fractures’.

Research and teaching

he is actively involved in research within orthopaedics and is responsible for training the next generation of surgeons.

Clinical expertise

He has been working as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon in the NHS since 2007. 

His expertise is in treating patients who have experienced trauma to the lower extremities, in particular:

  • Osseointegration after limb amputation
  • Complex orthopaedic injuries
  • Post-traumatic complications in the lower leg
  • Limb and joint reconstructions
  • Knee replacement (knee arthroplasty)

Expert in limb trauma

Having treated thousands of patients who have experienced limb trauma, he is a globally recognised expert within the field.

He has been involved in developing new surgical techniques in treating patients with infected wounds. One technique in particular has been audited by leading institutions and found to have a 100% success rate – the results of the study have been published in the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons in England (2013). His area of expertise is complex orthopaedic trauma and knee surgery.

Post traumatic sequelae (delayed consequences of an injury)

Apart from managing complex orthopaedic trauma where he mainly treats complex articular and peri-articular injuries of lower limbs (open fractures, bone defects, articular and periarticular injuries), he has a strong interest in the treatment of post-traumatic sequelae, such as:

  • Non-union (infected and non-infected)
  • Limb deformity
  • Bone defects
  • Osteomyelitis and limb lengthening (post-traumatic and cosmetic).

Knee surgery

In his elective practice he specialises in knee surgery:

  • Total knee replacement, including revisions for aseptic loosening and infections
  • Partial total knee replacements using uncemented implants
  • Knee arthroscopies (for degenerative and traumatic meniscal tears)
  • ACL reconstructions using anatomical tunnel positioning

He is an active member of the Cambridge Bone Infection Group where he regularly see patients with bone and joint infections together with plastic surgeons and infectious diseases specialists.
