About
Mr Giampaolo Gini is a general ophthalmic surgeon with a specific interest in retina and glaucoma. He has been performing vitreo retinal surgery since 1990. At present he is a freelance Consultant carrying out surgery both in Italy and in the UK.
In the past he served as Consultant both for the Italian (SSN) as well as the British (NHS) National Health systems. He has considerable surgical experience with roughly 16,000 procedures on the anterior part of the eye (cataract and glaucoma) and 14,000 on the posterior part of the eye (retina). Through the years he has developed a special interest in diabetes and ocular trauma reconstructive surgery. He is also known internationally as being one of the first surgeons to challenge the results of the Early Vitrectomy Study for the treatment of severe eye infections (endophthalmitis). The paper published in 2006 (Vitrectomy for Endophthalmitis; in “Ophthalmology”) has helped pave the way for others to follow with their own experiences.
He has received several national and international awards, among which the coveted Italian Ophthalmological Society Award (twice), the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Treacher-Collins Award and the American Society of Retina Specialists Reis-Buckler Award (twice). He is keen to teach younger Colleagues and has been a Faculty Member of the European Vitreo Retina Training School for the past 18 years. He has also been training Fellows at Southampton University Hospital NHS Trust for the past three years. He is currently President of the European Vitreo Retinal Society which counts 800 Members from 57 different Countries.
