Research
Mr El-Sharkawy’s research focuses on improving the safety, effectiveness, and value of treatments for patients with complex blood vessel disease. A major part of his work has looked at emergency care for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (a life-threatening condition). It helped demonstrate that having a surgeon-led emergency endovascular service leads to better patient outcomes and more efficient use of NHS resources, meaning patients can be treated faster, more safely, and at lower overall cost.
Mr El-Sharkawy has also published research on minimally invasive aneurysm repair in older patients, including those in their 80s with difficult aneurysm anatomy. This work shows that modern endovascular techniques can be used safely even in high-risk patients, reducing the need for large open operations and allowing quicker recovery.
In addition, Mr El-Sharkawy’s research includes treatment options for patients with abdominal pain caused by poor blood supply to the bowel when previous keyhole treatments have failed. He has reported successful bypass surgery in these complex situations, helping restore quality of life.
