About

Mr Ashraf El-Sharkawy is a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon providing expert care to patients across Warwickshire and the West Midlands. While serving at University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW), he also maintains a dedicated private practice at Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital, where he offers patients streamlined access to his specialist expertise. With over 15 years of clinical experience, his professional journey is defined by a rigorous foundation built at prestigious institutions including King’s College Hospital in London and Manchester Royal Infirmary. This elite training has equipped him with the technical skills to manage complex vascular conditions with a focus on innovation and compassionate, patient-centred care.

As a recognised expert in varicose vein treatment throughout Leamington Spa, Warwick, and Coventry, Mr El-Sharkawy understands that venous issues are more than just a cosmetic concern; they often impact a patient’s daily comfort and long-term quality of life. At Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital, he offers a comprehensive range of modern, minimally invasive vein treatments designed to achieve both functional relief and aesthetic excellence. By specialising in advanced solutions such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), foam sclerotherapy, and micro-sclerotherapy for spider and thread veins, he ensures that his patients benefit from the least invasive methods possible, prioritising a rapid recovery and a return to normal activities.

Beyond his work as a vein specialist, Mr El-Sharkawy is an expert in advanced lower limb revascularisation and limb salvage. Following a dedicated fellowship at King’s College Hospital in 2018, he has become a vital resource for patients across the Midlands facing the challenges of diabetic foot disease and critical limb ischaemia. By expertly navigating both traditional open surgery and cutting-edge endovascular techniques, he provides life-altering interventions to restore blood flow and prevent limb loss. His clinical portfolio further extends to the management of aortic aneurysms and carotid artery surgery, where his skill in stroke prevention remains a pivotal part of his practice.

Mr El-Sharkawy is committed to the advancement of vascular medicine through research and academia. He is a widely published author in peer-reviewed journals and holds a Certificate in Medical Education, underscoring his role in mentoring the next generation of surgeons within the NHS. This dedication to continuous learning and teaching ensures that whether he is seeing a private patient at Nuffield Health or within the NHS, they benefit from the most current, evidence-based surgical strategies available in the UK today.

Research

Mr El-Sharkawy’s research focuses on improving the safety, effectiveness, and value of treatments for patients with complex blood vessel disease. A major part of his work has looked at emergency care for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (a life-threatening condition). It helped demonstrate that having a surgeon-led emergency endovascular service leads to better patient outcomes and more efficient use of NHS resources, meaning patients can be treated faster, more safely, and at lower overall cost.

Mr El-Sharkawy has also published research on minimally invasive aneurysm repair in older patients, including those in their 80s with difficult aneurysm anatomy. This work shows that modern endovascular techniques can be used safely even in high-risk patients, reducing the need for large open operations and allowing quicker recovery.

In addition, Mr El-Sharkawy’s research includes treatment options for patients with abdominal pain caused by poor blood supply to the bowel when previous keyhole treatments have failed. He has reported successful bypass surgery in these complex situations, helping restore quality of life.
