Dr Melissa Maguire

Dr Melissa Maguire is a Consultant Neurologist and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in Neurology at the University of Leeds. She trained in Neurology at hospitals in Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle before becoming appointed as a Consultant Neurologist in 2011 at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. She has degrees in Medicine & Surgery and a Biomedical degree in Pathology from the University of Birmingham. Her Medical Doctorate from the University of Liverpool studied epilepsy therapeutics.

Dr Maguire is a regional expert in the care of adults with epilepsy. She is a regional lead in Yorkshire & Humber for highly specialised medical and surgical management of refractory seizures and oversees the care of patients being considered for epilepsy surgery.

Dr Maguire has a highly active research interest in epilepsy. She is the National Institute of Health & Care Research (NIHR) lead for Neurological Disorders research in Yorkshire & Humber. Her activities enable patients to access and take part in clinical trials of newer drug treatments. She also supervises postdoctoral students studying for higher degrees investigating epilepsy associated with brain tumours. She has a specific interest in music and epilepsy.

She has published over 100 articles and book chapters in epilepsy and is part of an international community of epilepsy researchers. She has been an editorial board member for the Cochrane Epilepsy Collaboration and has also worked for the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) and NHS England.
