About

Dr Makan trained at Guy’s and St Thomas’ qualifying with MBBS and BSc (Hons) in immunology. He developed expertise in pacemaker, defibrillator and biventricular pacemaker implantation and is a certified cardiac device specialist (CCDS) with the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners.He is experienced in dealing with patients with complex heart failure and arrhythmias, having been privileged to work in the cardiac transplant team at Harefield Hospital. He also has an interest in coronary artery disease with expertise in coronary angiography.

Dr Makan joined Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust in December 2011 and has since set up a brand new complex cardiac device service for Shropshire. He is currently the Clinical Director of Cardiology for the Trust. He was recently recognised as a COVID-19 Hero at the Trust for his work during the pandemic.

Personal interests

Dr Makan is married and has four children. He lives in Shrewsbury and outside work, his interests include marathon and half-marathon running and cricket. Through sport, he has raised money for Cardiac Risk in the Young and for the Cardiology department at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital.  He has featured in the Shropshire Star as well as participated in local radio interviews.

Research

Dr Makan undertook a period of research from 2003 to 2005 under the supervision of Professor Sanjay Sharma, a leader in the field of sports cardiology and inherited cardiac disease.  He was funded by Cardiac Risk in the Young, a charity aimed at increasing awareness and funding research in the prevention and treatment of conditions that cause sudden cardiac death.  He has published a number of original papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international meetings.  He is the author of a chapter in the ABC of Sports Medicine and in the Textbook of Common Cardiac Conditions. He has recently published abstracts at the British Cardiac Society.
