About
Dr Jayesh Makan is an experienced Consultant Cardiologist based at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital, specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, blackouts and heart rhythm disorders. He also has a strong focus on sports cardiology, supporting both active individuals and athletes with heart health concerns. Alongside his private practice, he works as an NHS Consultant at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust and is an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at St George’s Hospital, London, a leading UK cardiac centre.
Dr Makan trained at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Medical School, gaining an MBBS and a BSc (Hons) in Immunology, before completing specialist cardiology training in London, including at the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust. He has advanced expertise in pacemakers, defibrillators and cardiac resynchronisation therapy, and is a Certified Cardiac Device Specialist (IBHRE). Since 2011, he has played a key role in developing cardiology services in Shropshire, including establishing a complex cardiac device service and serving as Clinical Director of Cardiology for nearly a decade.
With a particular interest in sports cardiology, Dr Makan completed an MSc at St George’s, University of London, supported by a full academic scholarship. He has contributed to research in this field, working with leading experts and publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and is a Trustee of Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). A keen long-distance runner himself, he brings a practical understanding of managing heart health in active people. His areas of expertise also include atrial fibrillation, heart failure, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and cardiac screening.

Personal interests
Dr Makan is married and has four children. He lives in Shrewsbury and
outside work, his interests include marathon and half-marathon running and
cricket. Through sport, he has raised money for Cardiac Risk in the Young and
for the Cardiology department at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital. He has featured in the Shropshire Star as
well as participated in local radio interviews.

Research
Dr Makan undertook a period of research from 2003 to 2005 under the supervision
of Professor Sanjay Sharma, a leader in the field of sports cardiology and
inherited cardiac disease. He was funded by Cardiac Risk in the Young, a
charity aimed at increasing awareness and funding research in the prevention
and treatment of conditions that cause sudden cardiac death. He has
published a number of original papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented
at international meetings. He is the author of a chapter in the ABC of Sports Medicine and in the Textbook of
Common Cardiac Conditions. He has recently published abstracts at the British
Cardiac Society.
