Managing stress urinary incontinence | Andrea’s Bulkamid® injections at Nuffield Health North Staffordshire Hospital
- Overview
Andrea’s story
Andrea from Stoke-on-Trent underwent a minimally invasive procedure called Bulkamid®, for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence, at Nuffield Health North Staffordshire Hospital under the skilled hands of Consultant Gynaecologist, Ms Manjula Annappa, and is thrilled with the outcome.
For over 10 years, Andrea had struggled with stress urinary incontinence, a condition that causes accidental leakage of urine during activities that increase abdominal and pelvic pressure, such as laughing, sneezing, coughing, or exercising.
“Over the years my condition got worse, and I found it very difficult to manage my symptoms. It got to the point where I couldn’t even step off the pavement without having an accident. Intercourse was not possible; I couldn’t do any sporting activities and if I wanted to go for a long walk, I had to be prepared that there were toilets nearby.
“The constant fear of leaking or having an accident started to dominate my life, and was really affecting my confidence. So, I decided enough was enough and I wanted to do something about it,” she recalls.
Exploring treatment options
“After researching Bulkamid® injections, I was curious to find out more about the treatment and if it would work for me,” said Andrea.
Bulkamid® is a smooth, water-based gel injected into the urethral wall at three to four points, which helps prevent leakage during everyday activities. The procedure is conducted under local anaesthetic and takes around 10 to 15 minutes as an outpatient procedure.
Life-changing results
Andrea says that she is thrilled with the outcome of these injections.
“I wish I had done this procedure 10 years ago. I’m a changed woman!”
“It’s only been a couple of months since I had the procedure, and I can already see an 80% improvement in all of the symptoms I was previously experiencing. It’s life changing!
“Thank you to Ms Annappa and the team at Nuffield Health North Staffordshire Hospital. Everyone from the porter up to the consultant has been amazing.”
