Urodynamics measures the function of the bladder using a special machine, usually carried out by a consultant urologist or consultant urogynaecologist. The service is available for patients with complex urological problems.

What happens during a Urodynamics test?

Upon arrival with a full bladder, you will be asked to change into a gown and then pass urine into the urodynamics machine. This will measure the flow rate and volume of urine that you pass. A small ultrasound monitor will be placed on your lower abdomen to measure how much urine is left in the bladder.

To measure bladder function, two small tubes are placed, one in the rectum and one in the urethra, which in turn are connected to the urodynamics machine. This allows the bladder to be filled with sterile water or X-ray contrast in order to take pressure readings from the bladder.

You will be able to go home straight after the procedure. It is important to drink plenty of water afterwards to help avoid any urinary infections.
