Food handlers are defined as employees who fall into the following categories*:

a) People employed directly in the production and preparation of foodstuffs, including those in the manufacturing, catering and retail industries

b) People undertaking maintenance or repairing equipment in food handling areas, whether permanent staff or workers on contract, and visitors to food handling areas

The Food Safety Act prescribes standards of personal hygiene of food handlers.

Food handler screens can be carried out for pre-employment and in-employment investigations in order to identify potential sources of contamination during the handling of food and eliminate any contamination risk.
