Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI) Ultrasound
- Overview

Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI) is a type of ultrasound to measure how hard or soft an area of tissue is. This helps to detect scarring, fibrosis or abnormal changes.
Scarring and specific diseases often make tissue stiffer ("harder"). By measuring how quickly a wave travels through the tissue (created by the ultrasound probe), ARFI gives a numeric value for stiffness. Higher values usually suggest more fibrosis or a firmer lesion.
Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI) can be used for liver conditions such as:
- Fatty liver disease (NAFLD/MASLD)
- Alcohol-related liver disease
- Hepatitis B and C
- Autoimmune liver disease
- Cirrhosis
It also helps to estimate how much scarring there is in the liver without the need for a biopsy. ARFI can also be used to differentiate between benign and suspicious lesions in organs such as:
- The pancreas
- The spleen
- The thyroid
- Breast
- Kidney
- Prostate
- Muscles and other soft tissue.
