Your initial 45-minute appointment involves an assessment and treatment. We assess your pain and symptoms to determine the cause of these symptoms, then recommend a treatment plan for you and begin this treatment. Follow-up appointments are 30 minutes. Your physiotherapist will advise how many appointments you will need but you can stop treatment at any time.

At Brentwood we have a very experienced team of physiotherapists who can assist with any pain/injuries you may be suffering from; specialist interests within the team means that you will be able to speak with someone who fully understands your condition.

We are based within the hospital so we have strong relationships with the consultants working here, who also cover the Romford, Basildon, Chelmsford, Thurrock areas.

We have specialist therapists working in Hand Therapy and Women’s/Men’s Health so we can provide this additional service; alongside physiotherapists with extensive experience in Breast Cancer and Breast Reconstructive surgery.

We are able to offer services to both adults and children from the age of 6 with musculoskeletal problems. We do have a physiotherapist with a specialist interest in Paediatrics.

After qualifying as a Physiotherapist in 2006, Chris Barker has treated patients with a wide variety of conditions in the NHS and private practice. Through postgraduate courses, Chris has acquired a wealth of knowledge and expertise including joint manipulation/mobilisation, neural mobilisation, movement dysfunction, motor control training and pain management skills.

Chris has a special interest in treating spinal conditions and tendinopathy. He is also passionate about utilising his skills and experience to help his patients, whatever the problem or goal.

Amy Cox qualified in 2003, working within the NHS for the initial five years of her career gaining a comprehensive grounding in physiotherapy and moving into a senior role.

Amy has since worked within the private sector in hospital, gym and clinic settings, as well as working within amateur sport for several years. Her speciality is within the MSK outpatient setting, particularly spinal pain. 

Amy has previously worked for Nuffield Health as an advanced level practitioner before moving into the management role at the Brentwood Hospital.

As a physiotherapist, Colette believes it is very important to carefully question her patients and really listen, to set and work on goals that are important to them and after a thorough assessment to rehabilitate in a positive way.

Having gained experience in the NHS, private sectors and Australia she employs different techniques for different people including; hands-on techniques, re-assurance and relaxation and exercise including Pilates, Yoga and strength training to compliment patients goals and ability and to get them back to function.

All physiotherapists work closely with our surgeons in Brentwood and can also effectively deliver post-operative patient care. 

Colette works using evidence based practise, to make sure she clinically reasons her practise and ensures her treatments are effective for each person.

After qualifying in 2004, Laura Dobson gained experience in a wide variety of areas and settings within the NHS and private sector over seven years, in both junior and senior roles.

Laura started working in the Nuffield Health Brentwood Hospital in 2011 and uses her expansive experience and a variety of tools to help adults and children with musculoskeletal, neurological and orthopaedic problems achieve their goals. She works in both outpatients and inpatients.

Laura also has Pilates (APPI Matwork 1 and 2), Ante and Post Natal (Fit Back and Bumps) and Breast cancer rehabilitation (Pink Ribbon) qualifications.

Since qualifying in 2003, Linda Griffin has worked within the NHS, initially as a junior rotational post. This enabled her to consolidate her knowledge and then develop a breath of experience treating both acute and chronic conditions. It was during this period Linda had the opportunity to rotate into women’s health.

Having worked as a night sister on a busy gynaecology/surgical ward since 1994, it was a great opportunity for Linda to combine experience gained from both of her professions. It has and always will be an area she has a special interest and passion for.

Currently Linda works as the clinical lead therapist in women’s health Physiotherapy department in Southend Hospital, she has been in post there since 2005.

Linda has completed her ACPWH Ano-retcal and vaginal assessment and management course. Completion of a Manual pelvic floor therapy course has provided her with an array of treatment options for those with chronic pelvic/vulvar pain. She has also completed matwork 1+2 APPI course and uses this regularly within her practice.

Linda joined Nuffield Health in 2011 and has been given the opportunity to develop this service, which now offers assessment and management of bladder and bowel dysfunction, pelvic organ prolapse and pelvic pain to men and women. She also offers ante and post natal care.

Robin Higginson qualified from UEL in 2006 with a 1st class degree in BSc Physiotherapy, after which he pursued employment in the NHS, becoming MSK team lead and furthering his career with Nuffield Health. Alongside this, he established a successful local private clinic.

Robin has treated a variety of acute and long term musculoskeletal problems in a mix of ages and backgrounds. He has also provided occupational and onsite physiotherapy with several large national companies.

Robin completed his MSc degree in 2015, and currently works for Nuffield Health Brentwood Hospital as an advanced level physiotherapist. His interest lies around all musculoskeletal conditions, particularly persistent pain.

Outside of work Robin is a husband and father, and enjoys a variety of active pursuits including running around after his children.

Pat Hounsell is the Hand Therapist based at the Nuffield Brentwood Hospital. Pat has over 18 years of experience assessing and treating both Orthopaedic and Rheumatology patients with any hand related conditions.

Pat treats Orthopaedic patients post trauma – (wrist, finger, thumb and hand fractures, joint dislocations, tendon injuries, soft tissue injuries and nerve palsies). Patients who have undergone elective surgery (Orthopaedic and Plastics) – nerve decompressions, all types of Dupuytren’s release, thumb arthritis surgery, all joint replacements/fusions and trigger finger.

Pat will also assess and treat Rheumatology patients with all types of arthritis that result in stiffness, poor and painful range, weakness and reduced function.

Pat can offer bespoke splinting for any condition, wound and scar management post-surgery/injury, exercises to increase range, strength and function, swelling management, desensitisation, education, joint protection and use of wax for treatment for pain and stiffness.

Following consecutive serious knee injuries during a year as a professional rugby player with Harlequins, Steve Jay completed a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy at Brunel University in 2009. 

Steve has previously worked as a senior physiotherapist for NELFT in the NHS, and has a keen interest in cognitive functional therapy (CFT), with a particular interest in the assessment and treatment of persistent low back pain disorders.
