What is an Orthopantomogram (OPG)?

An OPG X-ray is commonly used to assess dental and jaw conditions that are not easily visible during a routine examination. It provides a broader overview than standard dental X-rays and is often requested by dentists, orthodontists, oral surgeons, or medical specialists.

An OPG may be used to:

• Assess impacted wisdom teeth
• Identify jaw or facial bone abnormalities
• Investigate jaw pain, swelling or TMJ issues
• Support orthodontic or dental implant planning
• Detect cysts, infections or bone changes
• Monitor dental development in children and young people

The procedure uses a low dose of radiation and is only performed when clinically justified, following IR(ME)R and UK radiology safety standards.

What to expect during your OPG X-ray

An Orthopantomogram is quick and straightforward:

• You will be asked to remove any jewellery or metal items around your head and neck
• You’ll stand or sit upright while the scanner gently rotates around your head
• The scan usually takes less than one minute
• There is no physical discomfort

You can return to your normal activities immediately afterwards.

Safety and suitability

• OPG X-rays are not routinely recommended during pregnancy unless clinically necessary
• Please inform us if you are, or may be, pregnant
• This scan is performed only following a referral from a healthcare professional
