Our One Stop Breast Clinic can assess a wide range of breast symptoms, including:
- A lump or thickening in your breast or armpit
- A change in the size, shape or appearance of one or both breasts
- A nipple that has become inverted or changed position
- Discharge from the nipple, including bloodstained discharge
- Breast or nipple pain
- Skin changes such as dimpling, puckering, redness or a rash
- Any other breast concern that you'd like assessed
- A family history of breast cancer and would like specialist advice and reassurance.
Most breast symptoms are not cancer. However, it is always important to have any new or unusual changes assessed promptly.
What happens during your appointment
Our One Stop Breast Clinic is designed to provide expert assessment as efficiently as possible, often within a single visit.
1. Specialist consultation
You'll meet with a breast consultant who will discuss your symptoms, medical history and any relevant risk factors before carrying out a clinical examination.
2. Diagnostic imaging
If required, you may undergo further investigations on the same day, including:
- Breast ultrasound
- Mammogram (breast X-ray).
3. Biopsy or tissue sampling
If an area requires further investigation, a sample may be taken for laboratory analysis. This could include:
- Fine needle aspiration (FNA): Using a very fine needle to collect cells for testing
- Core biopsy: Taking a small tissue sample under local anaesthetic.
These procedures are routinely performed and are generally well tolerated.
Receiving your results
For many patients, investigations provide reassurance that their symptoms are due to a benign (non-cancerous) condition.
If additional testing is required, results are typically available within a few working days. Your consultant will explain the findings, answer any questions and discuss any recommendations.
Should any further treatment or specialist care be needed, we'll guide you through the next steps and ensure you are referred to the most appropriate service for your ongoing care.
