About
Professor Bourne is Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in Cambridge and London, most recently directing the Glaucoma Service at Cambridge University Hospitals (Addenbrooke's), where he set up the Cambridge Eye Research Centre.
In May 2025, he moved on from the
NHS after 20 years as a consultant, to focus on delivering more bespoke
individualised care in the private sector, offering patients access to advanced
treatments, while also taking on more strategic roles nationally and
internationally.

Research
Extensive research interests and publications can be found HERE, principally relating to glaucoma that started with Glaucoma specialist Fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital and at University of California San Diego (c/o Prof Robert Weinreb). Led the national NHS clinical research program (NIHR) for Ophthalmology and now coordinates NHS eye research in East of England and chairs the UK National Clinical Eye Research Strategy
Research
interests include advanced techniques of glaucoma diagnosis and
progression and the management of Glaucoma in the community, along with
overseas ophthalmology which has involved design and analysis of several large
population-based surveys of eye disease. He has led the international
ophthalmic epidemiology reference group for 19 years that provides the WHO with
global/regional and country estimates of vision impairment.
