About

Professor James Byrne is a consultant general and upper gastrointestinal surgeon with over 20 years' experience providing patient-centred clinical and surgical care.

He is part of the clinical team at GI Choice, working in private practice and alongside the NHS at University Hospital Southampton.

Special interests

Professor Byrne has a specialist interest in reflux disease and hiatus hernia, offering advanced treatments including fundoplication, LINX®, hiatus hernia repair, and the innovative RefluxStop® procedure, which he introduced to UK clinical practice which Professor Fergus Noble.

He also performs laparoscopic and open hernia surgery and treats gallbladder disease and gallstones.

A specialist in oesophageal and stomach cancer surgery, Professor Byrne also has extensive expertise in obesity management. He provides personalised medical and surgical weight-loss treatments, including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric band surgery, and complex revisional bariatric procedures. His multidisciplinary approach integrates dietetic and psychological support to optimise patient outcomes.

Research

Professor James P Byrne is an internationally recognised bariatric and upper gastrointestinal surgeon with a strong commitment to advancing the treatment of obesity through clinical research and innovation. Based at University Hospital Southampton and the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre, he has led numerous national and international clinical trials evaluating new surgical techniques, medical devices

and non-surgical therapies for weight management.

His research focuses on developing safer, more effective

and less invasive treatments for obesity and metabolic disease, with the aim of improving patient outcomes and expanding treatment options. As Chief Investigator and Principal Investigator, Professor Byrne has extensive experience translating innovative technologies into evidence-based clinical practice.

Most recently, he led the Sirona First-in-Human Study, the first clinical evaluation of a novel gastro-retentive hydrogel designed to support weight loss. Published in Obesity in 2026, the study demonstrated an excellent safety profile together with clinically meaningful weight loss, supporting further development of this innovative therapy.

Professor Byrne has also played leading roles in landmark studies including the
BY-BAND-SLEEVE Trial and the EndoBarrier Randomised Study, which have helped shape obesity treatment within the NHS and internationally.

He has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed publications. His research publications can be viewed on
