Professor Emily Henderson

Prof. Emily Henderson is a Consultant Geriatrician at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust and Professor of Ageing and Movement Disorders at the University of Bristol. She trained in medicine at Bristol Medical School and completed a PhD in Parkinson's disease at the University of Bristol during her specialist training in geriatric medicine.

Prof. Henderson's practice covers the medicine of later life, with Parkinson's disease and related conditions as her subspecialty interest. She sees patients with atypical parkinsonian conditions and tremor, and treats the non-motor symptoms people often find most challenging on a day-to-day basis. This is integrated with consideration of falls, frailty, bone health, rehabilitation, dementia and cognitive difficulties, and the effects of taking several medications at once.

She practises holistically. Many patients come to her having already seen several specialists and want someone to take an integrated view and liaise closely with the other clinicians involved in their care, and families often value having one doctor hold the overall picture. This can include assessment and medical optimisation ahead of surgery, advising on optimum timing, medication adjustment and rehabilitation, with continued support afterwards.

At the University of Bristol, Prof. Henderson leads the Ageing and Movement Research Group and oversees an ambitious portfolio of clinical trials in age-related conditions, including the PRIME-Parkinson's programme. She was Chief Investigator of the CHIEF-PD trial, the UK's largest drug repurposing trial in Parkinson's, and has published over 80 papers, including first-author work in Lancet Neurology. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and past Vice President of Academic Affairs of the British Geriatrics Society.
