About

I am a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon based in Birmingham and Derby. I specialise in breast cancer, including inflammatory breast cancer, and reconstructive breast surgery.

I provide private care at Nuffield Health Derby Hospital and also work across specialist centres in Birmingham and London.

My aim is to provide high‑quality, personalised care while achieving the best possible medical and cosmetic results.

I qualified in medicine from the University of the Punjab in 1987. I was awarded gold medals for my academic achievements.

I then moved to the UK and completed my specialist surgical training at leading centres. These included several London teaching hospitals and the Edinburgh Breast Unit.

I also hold a Postgraduate Certificate and a Master’s degree in Education, both with distinction.

I have over 20 years of experience as a specialist breast surgeon.

Areas of expertise

I diagnose and treat a wide range of breast conditions, including:

  • Breast cancer, including complex and inflammatory types
  • Benign (non‑cancerous) breast lumps
  • High‑risk cases where preventative surgery may be needed
  • Male breast conditions

I look after both screen‑detected cancers and patients with symptoms. I manage over 100 new cancer cases each year.

Specialist procedures

I offer a range of breast surgery techniques, including:

  • Oncoplastic surgery, combining cancer removal with breast reshaping
  • Breast reconstruction after cancer surgery
  • Nipple‑sparing mastectomy (preserving the outer breast skin and nipple where possible)
  • Surgery for benign breast lumps
  • Preventative breast surgery for patients at higher risk

Many of my procedures are carried out as day cases. This means you can go home on the same day in most situations.

I work closely with a multidisciplinary team to provide safe and effective care. I focus on achieving the best possible results while supporting you throughout your treatment.

I will take time to explain your condition and treatment options clearly. My goal is to help you feel informed, reassured and confident at every stage of your care. 

Professor Carmichael is a noted name in her field, striving for and providing excellence in clinical care alongside her experienced multidisciplinary team, which undertakes surgery that's almost 80 per cent done as a day case. She has been awarded for her outstanding care and prides herself in her hard work, commitment and dedication to her surgical work, which is reflected in her patient's feedback.

Outside of my clinical and academic schedules, I am a keen reader who enjoys poetry (in both English and my mother tongue) and love spending time cooking international cuisines for my friends and family
