About

Ms Gael MacLean is a highly trained consultant oncoplastic surgeon specialising in breast cancer surgery based in Oxford. She is the Clinical lead of the NHS breast surgery department in Oxford, based at the Churchill and John Radcliffe Hospitals.

She specialises in a wide range of symptomatic and screen detected breast cancer surgery, axillary (armpit) surgery, therapeutic mammoplasty surgery (removing breast cancer while retaining the shape of the breast), mastectomies (which can be a day case procedure), breast reconstruction using implants, and a large range of benign breast operations including symmetrising surgery following breast cancer treatments.

Ms MacLean is committed to high surgical standards and believes the key to this is through the excellent training of surgeons. She was the inaugural honorary secretary of the faculty of surgical trainers based at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, whose surgical standards have been adopted by the general medical council for standardisation of surgical trainers.

Ms MacLean offers consultations at the Nuffield Manor Hospital in Oxford, via scheduled clinics or at short notice to meet individual needs. Ms MacLean is very happy to see patients who are either self funding, as well those with health insurance, as she works with all insurance companies.

Approach to patient care

Ms MacLean is passionate about finding the right operation for each individual patient and works in close collaboration with consultant radiologists, oncologists and specialist breast cancer nurses to ensure the best possible care for all her patients. This includes rapid imaging and personalised surgical planning.

Education

Ms MacLean graduated from Kings College medical school, University of London, has a Masters in surgical education and completed her postgraduate surgical training in Oxford, Reading, and during a Fellowship at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, and has been a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon for over twelve years.

Teaching

She has lectured on surgical training internationally and is active in training surgeons across the NHS.

Ms MacLean is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons both nationally and internationally and a regional representative for the Association of Breast Surgery, where she sits on the Standards Committee of this professional organisation.
