About
Mr Al-Wattar was appointed as a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Hereford County Hospital in 2019. He obtained his primary medical qualification in 2001 in Iraq and went on to complete his specialist Trauma and Orthopaedic training in the UK.
He undertook two advanced Shoulder and Elbow fellowships in Norfolk and Kent, as well as advanced Hand and Wrist fellowship training in Wessex. During his training, he worked alongside surgeons of national and international renown and gained further experience at the prestigious Wrightington Hospital, a tertiary centre for upper limb surgery. He also developed expertise in managing complex upper limb trauma while working in major trauma centres.
Mr Al-Wattar has earned acknowledgement and appreciation from Wye Valley NHS Trust (Staff recognition award) for his contribution and innovation to the upper limb service provision.
Mr Al-Wattar has a particular interest in WALANT (Wide Awake Local Anaesthesia No Tourniquet) surgery—a service he successfully introduced at Hereford County Hospital.
In addition to his clinical qualifications, Mr Al-Wattar has completed two higher academic degrees, with his research thesis focusing on enhancing patient safety in Trauma and Orthopaedic theatres.
He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS T&O) in 2012 and a Fellow of the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (FEBOT) in 2013. He is also a member of several professional bodies within his specialty.
Mr Al-Wattar provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary upper limb service. At his clinic, he focuses on accurate diagnosis and collaborative decision-making. He takes time to understand each patient’s concerns and preferences, clearly explaining investigations and treatment options with the help of visual aids. His approach includes outlining the benefits and potential risks of each intervention to support informed choices.
Mr Al-Wattar’s ethos is that many patients do not require surgery—but they do require timely, expert assessment and targeted therapy. For those who do need surgery, he provides high-quality operative care and excellent clinical outcomes.
