About
I specialise in treating all shoulder and elbow conditions, with a particular focus on sports injuries, keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery, and joint replacements. I am also committed to working in the field of trauma care.
I have wide experience in shoulder and elbow surgery and have completed advanced fellowships in Geelong, Australia, and at the Major Trauma Centre in Bristol. My specialist practice focuses on improving recovery after surgery and enhancing the overall experience for my patients.
Education
I qualified from University College London Medical School in 2001. After that, I moved to the West Country for my surgical training in Bath and completed my orthopaedic training in Bristol.
I became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2011 and started my role as a Consultant in Exeter in 2013.
Teaching
I have a keen interest in medical education. I've been involved in the education of medical students from the UK and abroad and see Exeter University’s Medical School as an exciting development for the city. I train Orthopaedic Surgical Trainees and Fellows of the Exeter Shoulder Unit.
Personal interests
Outside of work, sport has played a great part in Mr Thomas’ life and remains his main outlet for relaxation. He is a retired rugby player and now a keen cyclist, swimmer and novice triathlete. Being by the sea has also re-ignited a youthful passion for dingy sailing and kite surfing. He has a young family that manage to fill his time otherwise!

Research
High quality and relevant research underpins my practice. I've contributed to this body of knowledge throughout my career and I'm continually seeking novel and innovative ways of improving the care I provide for my patients. The Exeter Shoulder Unit is active in both local and national projects.
I have a portfolio of research projects exploring the biomechanical science of the shoulder joint. In my latest work I'm studying the basic science of shoulder replacement fixation and novel methods of shoulder reconstruction after injury.
I've won accolades for my investigations into the debilitating condition of frozen shoulder. I have a major interest in novel methods of enhancing patient experience and care during both day surgery and inpatient stays by using the Enhanced Recovery philosophy. My work in this field has been recognised regionally and internationally.
