About

Mr Shailesh Mohandas is a Consultant General Surgeon based in London, with over 20 years of surgical experience and a specialist interest in upper gastrointestinal (GI), hepatobiliary (HPB), and pancreatic surgery.

His scope of practice includes the full spectrum of gastrointestinal surgery, encompassing:

  • Benign upper GI and hepatobiliary surgery
  • Emergency general surgery
  • Benign colorectal surgery
  • Abdominal wall hernia surgery (including complex repairs)
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.

His specialist interests include:

  • Gallbladder surgery
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
  • Abdominal wall hernia repair, including complex hernias.

Mr Mohandas graduated from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, India, in 1995, and completed a Master’s in General Surgery (MS) at Bangalore Medical College in 1999. He then served as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Kasturba Medical College – one of India’s premier institutions – until 2003.

In the UK, Mr Mohandas underwent further advanced surgical training across high-volume tertiary centres, including:

  • Colorectal surgery: Trafford General Hospital, Royal Salford University Hospital, and Worcester General Hospital
  • Upper GI and HPB surgery: Royal Surrey County Hospital (Guildford), Queen’s Hospital (Romford), King’s College Hospital (London), Ninewells Hospital (Dundee), Colchester General Hospital, and Royal London Hospital.

He is known for his patient-centred approach, clinical precision, and commitment to surgical education. Mr Mohandas teaches UCL medical students, serves as the Surgical Lead and Undergraduate Examiner at North Middlesex University Hospital, and trains surgical trainees from the London Deanery.

He is a faculty member for multiple Royal College of Surgeons of England courses, including:

  • CCrISP (Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient)
  • Basic Surgical Skills
  • Core Laparoscopic Skills.

Mr Mohandas has published in peer-reviewed journals and has presented at international surgical conferences.

Mr Mohandas’s NHS practice is at North Middlesex University Hospital, part of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust – one of London’s high-volume centres for gallbladder and hernia surgery. He provides a comprehensive elective and emergency general surgery service.
