About
Mr Samuel Mackenzie is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, specialising in the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of sports injuries, traumatic injuries, and degenerative conditions of the upper limb.
He has particular expertise in shoulder disorders, including rotator cuff injuries, shoulder instability, dislocations, arthritis, tendon injuries, and complex shoulder trauma.
Education and experience
Mr Mackenzie completed two advanced specialist fellowships in shoulder and upper limb surgery at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the internationally renowned Sydney Shoulder Institute, gaining extensive experience in both advanced surgical procedures and non-surgical treatments for shoulder conditions.
Having personally experienced significant shoulder injuries and undergone shoulder surgery himself, Mr Mackenzie offers patients a unique understanding of the challenges associated with diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery. This personal insight enables him to provide compassionate, patient-centred care throughout every stage of the treatment journey.

Research and teaching
In addition to his clinical work, Mr Mackenzie is a respected academic and educator. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed scientific articles in orthopaedic and surgical journals and is the author of a highly successful textbook for surgical trainees. The book has been translated into multiple languages and has sold more than 30,000 copies worldwide, reflecting his commitment to education, surgical training, and advancing orthopaedic practice internationally.
