About
A Consultant Surgeon and Associate Professor with a specialist interest in Gastrointestinal, Laparoscopic, and Oncological Surgery.
He qualified in 1979 from Dow Medical College, Karachi, and completed his surgical training in the Mid‑Trent Deanery in the UK. He was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS) in 1985 and went on to achieve a Doctor of Medicine (DM) degree from the University of Nottingham in 1991.
The DM is the highest degree awarded by a university, and he was the first Pakistani General Surgeon to attain this distinction.
He was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary in 1994, where he went on to hold several senior leadership and educational roles, including:
- Director of Education, Derbyshire Royal Infirmary (1996–1998)
- Programme Director, Mid‑Trent Higher Surgical Training Programme (2001–2006)
- Council Member, Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland (2005–2008)
- President, Derby Medical Society (2013–2014)
- President, Derby South Rotary Club (2006–2007)
Humanitarian and charitable work
In 2005, he led a team of doctors from the East Midlands to provide medical aid to earthquake victims in South Asia. In 2006, he founded a charitable organisation originally known as the Midland Doctors Association, which has since grown into Midland Doctors, delivering sustained healthcare and humanitarian support nationally and internationally.
His charitable and humanitarian achievements include:
- Building a hospital in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan
- Providing medical services in Sindh and Kashmir
- Teaching medical students in Punjab
- Supporting local children with disabilities
- Establishing and supporting orphanages in Moldova
- Efforts to set up an HIV clinic in Malawi
- Fundraising to provide boats for Sri Lankan tsunami victims
- Deploying medical support in times of crisis across Pakistan
These contributions were formally recognised when he was honoured by Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace, acknowledging notable contributions made by members of the Commonwealth diaspora to their communities.
He is also the second Rotarian in his district to receive Rotary’s highest honour, “Service Above Self.”Mr Syed Yusuf Iftikhar is a consultant Surgeon, Hon Associate Professor and emiratus professor at the University of Azad Jammu Kashmir.
