About
Education and training
After graduating with an MBBS, he completed a three‑year Master’s degree in Surgery (Ophthalmology).
Mr Sharma subsequently undertook extensive postgraduate ophthalmology training in the United Kingdom, beginning in London and continuing across several renowned deaneries, including Cambridge, the Northern region, and Scotland.
He was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and later achieved a Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London. His advanced training included valuable subspecialty experience at King’s College Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital, London, where he gained wide exposure to complex ophthalmic conditions.
To further broaden his expertise, he undertook visiting surgical observerships with internationally renowned experts in Toronto and Halifax, Canada, gaining exposure to innovative and evolving treatment modalities in ophthalmology.
He has received focused training in micro‑invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), including iStent and Xen implants. This included a dedicated Xen implant surgical training course in Austria and exposure to the Trabectome procedure in the USA.
Clinical interests
He has a special interest in glaucoma, having completed advanced subspecialty glaucoma training in Newcastle upon Tyne, followed by a Senior Glaucoma Fellowship at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre.
His other interests encompass a wide range of laser treatments, including Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty (ALT), Peripheral Iridotomy (PI), YAG capsulotomy, cyclodiode laser, and iridoplasty.
He additionally has a growing interest in 24‑hour intra‑ocular pressure monitoring, utilising innovative technologies such as Triggerfish.

His clinical practice places strong emphasis on high‑quality patient‑centred care, with a focus on patient safety, satisfaction, and evidence‑based practice.
He is committed to delivering optimum, up‑to‑date ophthalmic care, underpinned by effective communication, empathy, and a patient‑focused approach.
Teaching
He is actively involved in medical education, serving as a clinical supervisor for junior doctors and supporting them with audit and research projects.

Mr R Sharma has published extensively in peer‑reviewed national and international journals and has presented at numerous national and international scientific meetings.
He was awarded the 'Fight for Sight Award' by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London which included a research bursary. He has been the chief investigator for a nationwide UK study.
He has been involved in numerous research and audit projects. He has numerous publications in scientific journals and has delivered presentations at national and international conferences. He has completed a research thesis dissertation that culminated in a Masters Degree in Ophthalmology.
